RULES & COMPETITION POLICIES

Here is a quick glance at the new and exciting updates for our 2020 TROPICAL HEAT INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL DANCE COMPETITION!

TYPES OF ENTRIES

Solos

CATEGORIES OF DANCE

BALLET – Performance must contain ballet technique incorporating formal classical movements. No pointe shoes are allowed in the ballet category. No acro/gymnastic tricks are permitted.

POINTE – Performance must use pointe shoes and consist of pointe/toe technique. No acro/gymnastic tricks are permitted.

JAZZ – Performance must consist of jazz technique. Up to three acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

TAP – Performance must use taps on shoes and display tap technique. Up to three acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

LYRICAL – Performance must have dynamic emotion and expressive movements demonstrated with fluidity, balance, extension and control. Up to three acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

MODERN – Performance must consist of interpretive movements using modern technique such as natural movements focused on the “core” of the body with coordination between breathing and movement as well as a dancer’s relationship with the floor. Up to three acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

CONTEMPORARY – Performance must consist of a combination of modern dance, lyrical and classical ballet elements. Up to five acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

In the above categories, lip-syncing and talking should be kept to a minimum, so as not to portray a character.

In the above dance categories, a limited number of acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible. An acro/gymnastic trick is defined as movements that pass through or stop at a fully inverted (upside down) position with both feet off the floor (the torso passing or stopping directly over the top of one’s head/shoulders).

Acro/gymnastic tricks include:

forward rolls/backward rolls spiderlings handsprings
headstands cartwheels tucks
handstands roundoffs pikes
handstand rolls walkovers layouts
chest presses/chest rolls aerials fulls

 

A tumbling pass is considered one acro/gymnastic trick.

Lifts with other dancers are not considered acro/gymnastic tricks.

*If a performance violates this rule the act will be recategorized, the Studio Director, Team Leader, or Coach will be notified and the $50 change of performance fee will be applied.

ACRO/GYMNASTICS – Performance must use a combination of dance technique and acro/gymnastic movements, such as walkovers, aerials, handsprings, etc. Any number of acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

FOLK/ETHNIC Performances which are to a significant degree bound by tradition with strong cultural roots. Any number of acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

POM-PON – Performance using pom-pons incorporating precise and definite movements.  Choreography should incorporate visuals. Any number of acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

NOVELTY/MUSICAL THEATRE – Performance featuring any style of dance that is novelty or theme based and portraying a recognizable character or any style of dance themed from a Broadway, Movie or Television Show. Any number of acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

HIP HOP/FUNK – Performance demonstrating street style jazz incorporating hip hop and/or funk choreography. Any number of acro/gymnastic tricks and breakdancing are permissible.

IMPROV- Performance will focus on versatility, improvisation, and the process of spontaneously creating traditional and non-traditional expressive movements using a variety of levels to enhance the dynamic and dimensions of the movements, with Musicality being the main focus.

OPEN – Performance demonstrating any style of dance or a combination of dance styles. Any number of acro/gymnastic tricks are permissible.

Please note categories may be combined with like genres based on the number of entries.

AGE DIVISION

Something for everyone! Tropical Heat International prides itself on providing a performance platform for all age groups.

*Age Divisions are determined by the age the dancer at the time of competition November 21st, 2020*

6-8 (Mini)
9-11 (Primary)
12-17 (Secondary)
18+ (Senior & Adult)


Please note age groups may be combined based on the number of entries. 

PERFORMANCE TIME LIMITS

Solos – 2:45 time limit

Improv – up to 1-minute time limit

2020 RULES & REGULATIONS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE RULES BELOW COULD RESULT IN POINT DEDUCTIONS AND/OR DISQUALIFICATION.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Official online entries must be completed in their entirety.

ALL entries must be registered with a dance team, studio, gym, school, or club and represented by a studio, club, or team owner or director.  NO independent entries are permitted to compete in ANY division.

Entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and will be limited to the amount of performance time available.

Any cancellations of entries after the deadline will result in a loss of all deposits and entry fees for that event. There will be a $50 late fee per registered participant after the deadline date.

No entries will be processed without full payment. Payment can be in the form of Bank deposits/online transfers. Paypal payments are also accepted. 

All balances must be paid in FULL prior to the competition.

Tropical Heat International reserves the right to add additional competition days.

Tropical Heat International also reserves the right to cancel any event that does not meet the minimum number of acceptable entries. In the event of a cancelled competition, all entry fees will be refunded. There will be NO refunds for entries if the required minimum number of acts are registered and the competition has been confirmed.

All entries and performances must be correct and verified by the coach, teacher, team manager and/or studio/gym director.

Any changes to dancers in performances must be made prior to the competition. Any changes to age divisions and/or categories should be made prior to competing performances.

IMPORTANT DATES / LATE FEES

Last Day to register November 13th, 2020

Last Day to pay for Registered Competitor November 16th, 2020 

There will be a $50 late fee per participant between the deadline of  November 13th, 2020 and the payment deadline of November 16th, 2020

CHANGE FEES

Changes to performances after November 13th, 2020 will incur a $20 fee per change. These include:

Change of act name

Change of age division

Change of division type

Change of category

**Changes that occur on site due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or injury, may not be subject to the NEW change of performance fee.

 

 AFTER PAYMENT 

The final tentative schedule and zoom links will be sent on November 20th to the studio, club, or team owner or director, and they will share the link with their registered competitors. We will inform the studio of the registered number each dancer must log in with. 

SPECTATOR INFORMATION

Daily Admission (1 day)  is $35 

Weekend Admission (2 days) is $60 

Zoom links will be sent on November 20th. 

Competition will open exactly 10 minutes prior to the first scheduled act. No spectators will be allowed in before that time. All participating teachers, dancers and spectators are expected to display good sportsmanship. Failure to comply could result in immediate disqualification and loss of privileges to participate in future Tropical Heat International competitions.

Please keep in mind that unforeseen circumstances, such as technical difficulties and weather occurrences, may slightly delay the schedule.

NO RECORDING 

Recording all or any part of the competition from the live feed is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Any Studio or Spectator found recording may be removed from the event by the host.

All contestants grant permission for Tropical Heat International to use photography and videography of their performances for promotional purposes including advertising, publicity and posting on social media outlets.

SAFETY

Tropical Heat International and the hosting facility are not responsible for any kind of damage, loss or injury sustained by contestants. Dancers competing take certain inherent risks when involved in any physical activity. Participation in this competition indicates the acceptance of such risks by the performers. Therefore, upon registration to any Tropical Heat International event, it is agreed that participants will not hold Tropical Heat International, its directors or employees responsible for injuries that occur or illnesses that may be contracted during the competition event. Studio Owner/Directors agree to adhere to the Release of Liability Clause which is completed during the registration process.

AGE DIVISIONS

AGE DIVISIONS ARE DETERMINED BY THE AGE OF DANCER AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION NOVEMBER 21st, 2020.

Contestants will be responsible for showing proof of age to the Competition Director should a question arise.
